The IJP/PKU Workshop for Young Prosthodontic Educators
December 4-7, 2012, Beijing, China
The International Journal of Prosthodontics (IJP) and the Prosthodontic Department at Peking University (PKU) are happy to announce that they will co-sponsor a Teachers’ Workshop for Asian early-career Young Prosthodontic Educators (YPE) on December 4-7 in Beijing, China.
The IJP’s Editor-in-Chief and editorial team sought PKU partnership for this program because of the latter’s excellent and long-standing reputation in Chinese Dental Education; and thanks to funding provided by State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs of China, and School of Stomatology of PKU, a teaching Faculty of leading international Prosthodontic educators from North America, Europe and Australia has been recruited to conduct the Workshop together with selected Chinese colleagues. The Faculty provides pro bono time and expertise to this educational initiative and conduct the four day program for up to 32 selected participants through short lecture presentations, tutorials and extensive discussion. The Workshop’s first day provides a review of clinical research protocols followed by small group analyses of selected and previously circulated research papers. The subsequent two mornings comprise several short presentations from faculty as background material that will be used to debate diverse aspects of the selected clinical case histories scheduled for the two afternoon sessions. The latter will see participants break-out once again (as in the first afternoon) into small tutor-led groups. This offers an excellent opportunity to analyze and debate the various treatment options for the case histories in the context of the mornings’ reviews and knowledge of published literature. The fourth and final morning will concentrate on a collective, participant-driven scrutiny of the required research and educational protocols related to the exercise of making best treatment decisions for prosthodontic patients.
Participants will be selected by the Workshop Committee from the pool of Asian applicants. Applicants should preferably be at an “early career” stage of their teaching commitment and currently contracted to a 50% to 100% teaching position in the discipline. Membership in the International College of Prosthodontists is a preferred prerequisite. The criteria for final selection include applicant merit, support from the department or faculty, current and future scholarship prospects, and perceived best potential for future clinical academic leadership in the discipline. Application reviews and selections will be made by the workshop organizational committee, and all selected participants will receive a workshop program that includes case history and reading assignments as well as travel and accommodation information. Interested YPE should submit their Workshop attendance application, a short current/recent CV, a one-page essay on how such a workshop could impact upon the applicant’s scholarly development, and an endorsement or recommendation from applicant’s department/discipline head or faculty dean to Professor Yongsheng Zhou atkqzhouysh@hsc.pku.edu.cn as soon as possible. The application deadline is strictly on September 30, 2012.
Information regarding registration and additional details for the 2012 Workshop will appear in both ICP (International College of Prosthodontists) webpage (www.icp-org.com) and in regular IJP issues. Potential YPE participants are encouraged to consider attending this highly appreciated effort to nurture strong scholarly commitments to the clinical discipline.
